Netherlands’ Youngest, First Openly Gay Prime Minister Takes Office

After a stunning victory in last October’s Dutch elections, Rob Jetten became the country’s youngest prime minister in its history on Monday, and the first openly gay head of government.

Jetten’s victory came on the heels of the far-right Freedom Party’s withdrawal from a previous governing coalition, the most right-wing in the country’s recent memory, which lasted less than a year.

After almost 120 days without a new government, Jetten’s progressive party, Democrats 66 (D66), formed a coalition with the center-right People’s Party for Freedom and Democracy.

However, despite the historic appointment as prime minister, Jetten leads a minority government: holding only 66 seats in the lower house of parliament’s 150.
